PhD in Materials Science (Photocatalytic doping of organic semiconductor) in the EU Training Network FADOSNorrköpingReferensnummer LiU-2025-03941The Organic Nanoelectronics group, led by Prof. Simone Fabiano, at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, Linköping University, is now seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate to join the European Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network FADOS. The successful candidate will join a cohort of 17 doctoral students based at 16 research groups in Europe and the UK.About FADOS:FADOS, Fundamentals and Applications of Doped Organic Semiconductors, is a consortium composed of eight universities, four research institutes, and four companies from EU countries, the UK, and Switzerland. The mission of FADOS is to achieve targeted modification of semiconductor properties through electronic doping to control and modify their electronic characteristics. The project's goal is to develop fundamental understanding and innovative fabrication processes to solve urgent problems in organic electronic devices, and enable new components with sustainable functionalities. Collaboration with industry partners will enhance the translation of research into real-world applications.The 17 Doctoral candidates recruited for this international project will receive training at the forefront of research and innovation in organic electronics. Moreover, the network will provide Doctoral candidates with exposure to academic and commercial working environments through a balanced secondment plan, and access to a complete training programme complementing scientific skills with personal and entrepreneurial skills, including communication to various audiences, career development, intellectual property and startup-funding.The doctoral candidates will form a strong cohort through participation in seven network-wide events as well as secondments and collaborations, which entail travel to several different EU countries.Your work assignmentsThe doctoral candidate will investigate new strategies for controlling the electronic properties of organic semiconductors through light-driven chemical doping. The work will involve combining tailored materials design with advanced characterization methods to enable new device functionalities. The research aims to expand the capabilities of organic electronic devices by integrating light-responsive and multi-modal operation.The tasks will include:
  • Exploring new doping strategies to modulate the properties of organic semiconductors
  • Performing optical/electrical measurements to study charge transport and doping effects
  • Implementing the resulting materials and processes into functional electronic devices
The project will include three secondments:
  • University of Bern (Switzerland) - advanced in-operando spectroscopic techniques
  • Molecular Gate (Spain) - advanced methods to image doping profiles
  • Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany) - biocompatibility assessment
The work will be done in close collaboration with the other members of the FADOS network.Your qualificationsApplications are welcomed from candidates with a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent, including candidates who are about to complete their degrees) in material science, chemistry, physics, or related fields. In addition to the above, essential requirements include:
  • Knowledge of semiconductor materials and/or organic electronics
  • Good communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Willingness and the ability to travel both within the Schengen region, the UK, and abroad to conduct research (including secondments) and attend conferences and network activities
  • Self-motivation and a strong interest in science and fundamental research
  • Willingness to work as part of a team.
In addition, desirable requirements include:
  • Experience in organic semiconductor processing and characterization
  • Knowledge or experience related to the doping of organic semiconductors
  • Knowledge of photochemistry and/or photocatalysis
Eligibility for FADOS programme:
  • At the time of recruitment, be in the first four years of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • Mobility rule: The applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
  • Demonstrate their ability to understand English and express themselves fluently in speech and writing.
  • The applicant can be of any nationality.

More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available atThe employment has a duration of normally four years' full-time equivalent. Extension of employment up to five years is based on the degree of teaching and institutional assignment. Further extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances. You will initially be employed for one year, after which your employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, depending on your progress through the study plan.Starting date 1st of February 2026 or by mutual agreement.Salary and employment benefitsThe salary of doctoral students follows a locally negotiated salary progression.
