Thesis - Netflix VMAF quality metric for Surveillance Video

The idea behind this Master Thesis is to evaluate Netflix innovative VMAF quality metric and see if it can be adopted to surveillance. VMAF calculates PSNR, SSIM, MS-SSIM etc and then uses Machine Learning to weight these measurements against a model. The Holy Grail in Video is to be able to do accurate automated Non-Reference Quality Evaluations. I.e. determine the quality for a video stream without human interaction and without comparing it against a known source. A-B testing in a controlled environment is still the best way to do this but it's very time consuming.
Besides the default VMAF model which predicts the quality of videos displayed on a 1080p HDTV in a living-room-like environment, VMAF also contains a set of tools that allows a user to train and test a custom VMAF model.
Use the tools from Netflix to create a Axis model based upon our own videos and our own scoring and compare the default-models
- 1080p at 3H
- 4k at 1.5H
The result would be a Non-Reference method of evaluating Video Quality on our cameras in real-time, incorporating everything from the optics, the sensor, the Image Processing Pipeline and the encoder providing Axis with an unsurpassed way in production to verify that the Golden Eye Quality isn't compromised.
