We look forward to receiving your application!Work assignmentsThe Department of Thematic Studies, division of Environmental Change, carries out research and teaching on interactions between the environment and societal development. The division offers expertise and research in natural and social sciences, technology, and humanities. Examples of the research areas that are carried out by professors at the division of Environmental Change includes Biogeochemistry, Environmental Microbiology and Anaerobic Digestion Processes, Environmental Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Communication, Environmental Policy, and Environmental Humanities. This recruitment aims to strengthen the area of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, which is important for several research areas and many employees.The division performs teaching in subjects such as Environmental Science, Natural Science and Geography. The teaching includes responsibility for a bachelor's programme, a master's programme, single subject courses, and courses in the Primary School Teacher Programme. The division is also responsible for an interdisciplinary PhD Programme in Environmental Science with a strong connection to current societal challenges. The division runs an advanced environmental research laboratory providing capacity for various analyses and experiments, which is also a resource for the whole Linköping University.We seek a professor in Environmental Change with focus on Environmental Analytical Chemistry. The rapid ongoing multidimensional environmental change generates several grand challenges for humanity. It is increasingly clear how environmental change has effects beyond ecosystems and societal resource supply, and its direct impacts on human health become increasingly apparent. A basis for studying the consequences of environmental changes is to continuously develop our ability to analyse relevant variables in complex environments. This need includes both the capacity to analyse increasingly complex mixtures of human-made chemical substances that ecosystems and societies are exposed to, and the capacity to analyse the chemical components of different environments to better understand contexts, mechanisms, and processes.The holder of the position is expected to focus on laboratory-driven experimental work and field studies, which also involves the responsibility for developing the department's environmental research laboratory. You are expected to successfully conduct research in collaboration with other relevant research areas at the division, and to develop a research portfolio in line with the interdisciplinary mission of the division of Environmental Change. It is central that you are open to developing analytical methods and activities in line with the strategic needs of the division, even beyond your current professional focus.You are active in the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through academic publications and help attract external research funding.As a professor, you will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and supervise students at different educational programmes across faculties at Linköping University. The work includes course design and course coordination responsibilities.You contribute actively to the university's development work. Beyond academic collaborations, cooperation with the non-academic society is an integral part of the university's research and education mission. Cooperation within education takes place by planning, organizing, and implementing quality education in interaction with societal actors. Cooperation in research can occur by dissemination to make research broadly accessible, or by utilizing research cooperation with societal actors.The employment may also involve administrative and management duties. A professor at the Department of Thematic Studies is expected to contribute in constructive and positive ways to the collective work environment and to take on various leadership assignments. This includes being a present, active, and good professional role model.Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group's professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as self-evident in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimum way and enjoy your working community.QualificationsWe are looking for a candidate who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical expertise.For this employment particular attention is paid to scientific expertise, second to pedagogical expertise, and third to other proficiencies which are judged to be equivalent to each other.In terms of scientific expertise, the following will be assessed:
  • Documented skill in quantitative laboratory-based analyses of environmental variables relevant to the department's activities (including the entire measurement chain from sample collection to data analysis) is a requirement.
  • Documented skill in leading and developing research concerning various types of environmental chemical analyses and underlying questions that span multiple research areas is a requirement.
  • Documented skill in obtaining external research fundings in competition as the lead applicant is a requirement.
  • Documented skill in developing new environmental chemical analysis capabilities (including the entire measurement chain from sample collection to data analysis) is particularly
  • Documented skill in research collaboration with researchers from other fields is particularly meritorious.
  • Documented success in initiating and implementing innovative research beyond the established or traditional perceptions within relevant research areas is particularly meritorious.
In terms of pedagogical expertise, the following will be assessed:
  • Documented skill in supervision of at least one PhD student as main supervisor at all stages from admission as a PhD student to final defence of the PhD thesis is a requirement.
  • Documented pedagogical expertise within undergraduate teaching in topics of relevance to the position, including course responsibilities, is particularly meritorious.
Other proficiencies that will be assessed for this position are:
  • Documented skill to develop synergies and collaboration within academia or with the society beyond academia is particularly meritorious.
  • Documented expertise in developing laboratory infrastructures or their analytical capacity is particularly meritorious.
  • Documented administrative skill and leadership in taking responsibility for the work environment and personnel, as well as for creating and maintaining a diverse, inclusive, and constructive workplace are particularly meritorious.
