Professor of Mass Spectrometry ImagingThe Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences is an interdisciplinary environment where 10 research areas work to contribute to better medicines and a healthier world. With laboratories in the heart of Uppsala Biomedical Center and Sweden's only Faculty of Pharmacy, we are a vital engine in the development of education and research in the pharmaceutical sciences. More information about the department and its activities is available at uu.se/farmbio. State-of-the-art equipment for mass spectrometry imaging is available, and the department hosts a SciLife lab infrastructure for spatial mass spectrometry: https://www.scilifelab.se/units/spatial-mass-spectrometry/.Subject AreaMass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a cutting-edge technique with significant implications for pharmaceutical research and development, as well as the study of diseases such as neurological disorders and cancer. This discipline integrates advanced analytical techniques to visualize the spatial distribution of exogenous drugs and their metabolites, as well as endogenous biomolecules within biological tissue. Research in this area encompasses several key topics, including the development of novel methods for the application of MSI instrumental platforms (matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)) and MSI for studying the distribution and dynamics of molecules in different organs, cells and biofluids.DutiesThe successful candidate will be expected to lead and develop research and education in MSI. This includes operational and staff responsibilities, as well as teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. The position involves leading an active research group focused on pharmaceutical and biomedical applications of MSI. The role will also include departmental and faculty-wide administrative and managerial duties. Research expertise must be demonstrated through high-quality, independent research activities with a strong international impact. Duties also encompass disseminating research findings and staying updated on advancements within the field and relevant societal developments. The professor will play a pivotal role in fostering a dynamic and collaborative research environment that attracts talented students and researchers. Securing external funding to support innovative research projects in MSI is a key responsibility.QualificationsTo be eligible for the position of professor, candidates must demonstrate both research and teaching expertise (Chapter 4, Section 3, Higher Education Ordinance). According to the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University (AR), personal qualities must align with performing the duties effectively (Section 5, AR).Research expertise should be demonstrated by independent research work and maintaining a high international standard. The applicant must show proficiency in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research; securing research funding competitively; and supervising doctoral students. Contributions to the academic community will be assessed based on the quality and scope of publications in relevant journals (Section 31, AR).The applicant must have an extensive background in MALDI-MSI and the research should be application-driven within the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields.Teaching expertise should be demonstrated through qualifications in education and teaching, including well-documented supervision at all academic levels. A prerequisite for teaching expertise is completion of relevant higher education teacher training or equivalent knowledge. If necessary, this training can be completed within the first two years of employment and must include third-cycle supervision (Sections 22 and 32, AR).The applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish or English.Assessment CriteriaWhen selecting among qualified applicants, primary consideration will be given to research expertise, followed by teaching expertise. In assessing research expertise, the primary focus will be on research quality. The scope of research, in terms of both depth and breadth, will also be considered. Additionally, the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and doctoral education, acquire competitive research funding, and interact with the academic and broader community are important (Section 3, Guidelines and Assessment Criteria for Recruiting and Promoting Teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (GA) and Section 20, AR).In assessing teaching expertise, the primary focus will be on teaching quality. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will be considered. The ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching, connect research to teaching, and engage with higher education teaching and learning issues are essential (Section 4, GA, and Section 22, AR).This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of MALDI-MSI and its applications in both pharmaceutical and biomedical research within a supportive and innovative academic environment. The successful candidate's research program should complement and strengthen existing areas of expertise within the department. We are particularly interested in a researcher with a strong focus on the application of MALDI-MSI in the pharmaceutical field. To excel in this role, a strong record of achievement in both research and teaching is essential. Extensive experience with MALDI-MSI, encompassing method development, data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation, is a must. Additionally, a demonstrably strong publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals is crucial. Securing research funding is a key responsibility, so a proven track record of success in grant writing and project management is highly desirable. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential for leading and motivating a research group.Assessment criteria; other proficiencyAdministrative expertise is significant to the position and will be assigned weight. Administrative expertise is demonstrated through, for example, the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in a suitable and effective manner, as well as the ability to specify and adhere to time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality. See also sections 28-29 AR and section 5 GA.Management expertise is highly important for the position. According to AR, management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead activities and staff, make decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for the effective achievement of common objectives. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. See also sections 30-31 AR and section 5 GA.When assessing collaboration expertise, experience of and expertise in education and outreach work, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between academia and the wider community, as well as experience of innovation and entrepreneurship, will be given weight. (GA Section 6)In an overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, parental leave, part-time work due to childcare, trade union responsibilities, military service or similar activities are to be treated as work experience. (AR Section 94)When the University appoints new teachers, it must select the applicants who, following a qualitative overall assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to perform and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the positive development of the department. (AR Section 4).The gender equality aspect must be applied in an appointment process if it is evident following a qualitative assessment that two applicants of different gender have equal or approximately equal qualifications and if one gender is underrepresented (constitutes less than 40% of those in the occupational category in question and at the workplace concerned). (AR Section 95)All qualifications must be documented so that both quality and degree can be assessed.During the evaluation of submitted applications, international referees may be used. In this event, the University may need to send applications that are written in Swedish to a qualified translator. In the event of any disagreement between the English and the Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.Links to relevant regulations and guidelinesSalary: Individual salary
