The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, seeProject: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that affects 5-10% of the population. Up to 80% of patients report that diet strongly influences their symptoms, particularly carbohydrate-rich foods. Dietary interventions with carbohydrate restriction have been shown in clinical studies to alleviate IBS symptoms. Traditional dietary management through individual consultations is resource-intensive and does not sufficiently reach all patients. Therefore, alternative methods that can reach more patients with less resources need to be developed. This project aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of diet, and specifically carbohydrates, in IBS. We wish to investigate, on a larger scale, the effects of digital dietary counseling as well as patients' experiences of diet and dietary treatment. Using previously collected data on dietary intake, along with questionnaires providing information on gastrointestinal symptoms, extraintestinal symptoms, quality of life, and mental health, we will examine associations between symptoms and the intake of total carbohydrates, specific carbohydrates, and carbohydrate-rich foods. With the help of breath tests, we will study the prevalence of malabsorption of different sugars and potential associations with symptoms, i.e., possible carbohydrate malabsorption and specific carbohydrate intolerance. We also aim to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-care strategy in the form of “Prescribed diet,” where digital information on the diagnosis, the role of food in symptom development, and three different carbohydrate-restricted diets is offered, studied, and compared with traditional dietary management. Through interviews with patients with IBS, we hope to gain deeper insights into how food and the intake of specific nutrients and foods affect their symptoms, quality of life, and attitudes towards food and meals, as well as their experiences with digital dietary counseling. It is an advantage if the candidate has good knowledge/experience in gastroenterology, functional gastrointestinal disorders, and/or nutrition. Clinical experience from work as a dietitian or in healthcare with patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorder is an advantage, as is practical experience in clinical studies, dietary assessments, or interventions. Furthermore, knowledge of qualitative methods, statistical methods and experience with relevant software (e.g. SPSS, R) and database management (e.g. Excel, REDCap) is an asset. Good knowledge of English is essential. The project also requires good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, as meetings with patients will be in Swedish. The candidate needs to have good organizational skills and be able to work both independently and in collaboration with others in the research group. Applicants should have a strong interest in translational and patient-centered research.Doctoral studies comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.
