The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) is located in the Arrhenius Laboratories, situated at the University Campus at Frescati. Research spans a broad range of biological subject areas including ecology and evolution, marine biology, plant physiology, systematics, and environmental and climate science. Presently around 100 people, including 35 PhD students and 15 postdocs, in 25 research groups, work at DEEP.More information about us, please visit: .Project descriptionThe Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences invites applications for postdoktoral fellow for the project “Harnessing evolutionary transitions, machine learning, and genomics to decode pollen evolution and unravel sexual selection mechanisms shared across kingdoms”. The project is led by Prof. Tanja Slotte in close collaboration with co-investigators Prof. John Fitzpatrick, Prof. Catarina Rydin, and Dr. Allison Hsiang at Stockholm University. This project will investigate the evolutionary drivers and genomic consequences of pollen evolution in response to shifts in pollination mode in flowering plants. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on identifying genomic signatures of selection on pollen in relation to evolutionary transitions in pollination mode. The work will involve comparative genomic analyses in a phylogenetic framework, as well as population genomic and transcriptomic analyses in suitable plant systems. The project is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.Main responsibilitiesThe position involves research within the Knut and Alice Wallenberg funded project. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for comparative genomic analyses and de novo genome assembly and annotation of plant genomes, as well as population genomic and transcriptomic analyses. Experimental work with plants and collection of plant material in the field may also be part of the work.Qualification requirementsIn order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.Assessment criteriaIt is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills, especially within the area of Evolutionary Biology and Evolutionary Genomics. Experience of de novo assembly and annotation of eukaryotic genomes, as well as evolutionary genetic studies of plant reproductive systems is highly meriting. The applicant should have proven expertise in genomics and be used to analyse large genomic data sets. Documented scientific qualifications within the research area is a requirement. Excellent proficiency in English (the working language of the group) is required. The postdoctoral fellow needs to be able to work well in a collaborative environment, as well as independently. Finally, creativity and drive are personal characteristics that are desirable.About the employmentThe position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances.
